my great-grandmother was russian and when i was 4 years old and went into her room often but she was on her deathbed she used to sing it to me as i sat near her...i did not understand a word but i felt sleepy and dreamed of white rabbits...after she died i haven't heard this song except for youtube

Is this a folk song or a war time song?

war time. it was played in a mic and use to put the germans to sleep in stalingrad
"While preparing for the dangerous battle,,please remember your mother” ね。

The English translation for half of the song isn't right. The song is about a mother who longs for her child and thinks and prays for him while he's off in a distant land. There is no part that mentions guns saddles or horses and although there is the correct translation it's for the wrong part :(Correct part-Cossack deep in your heart. I will accompany you and watch you go, You will just wave your hand. How many secret bitter tears Will I shed that night! Sleep, my angel, calmly, sweetly, Bayushki bayu. I will die from yearning, Inconsolably waiting, I'll pray the whole day long, And at night I'll wonder, I'll think that you're in trouble Far away in a strange land. Sleep now, as long as you know no sorrows, Bayushki bayu. On the road, I'll give you A small holy icon, And when you pray to God, you'll Put it right in front of you,
Everything else in the translation is wrong
